Description
The abuse of prescription narcotics has reached epidemic proportions across the nation. Both national and state-wide efforts to combat the problem affect the practice of dentistry in our state. This course will review safe and ethical ways to prescribe and monitor the use of controlled substances as they relate to dental care and how to manage dental pain consistent with current standards of care.
Objectives
Upon completion of this presentation, you will be able to:
- Discuss the nature and magnitude of the opioid epidemic in the US & TX.
- Explain safe and effective pain management techniques.
- Summarize approved procedures of prescribing and monitoring controlled substances.
- Define current continuing education requirements specified by statutory law, state boards of dentistry and other governmental agencies such as the DEA.
Jacqueline M. Plemons, DDS, MS, CRT received her dental degree and Certificate in Periodontics from Baylor College of Dentistry. She received a Master of Science in Oral Biology from Baylor University and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology. Dr. Plemons has a private practice in Dallas, Texas and teaches part-time as a Clinical Professor in the Department of Periodontics at Texas A&M School of Dentistry where she serves as Director of the Stomatology Division. Dr. Plemons is actively involved in organized dentistry on a local, state and national level. She lectures across the United States in the fields of periodontics and oral medicine.
