Description 

This course will discuss appropriate use and misuse of opioid analgesics in a comprehensive analgesic prescribing plan for dentists. Significant time will be devoted to discussion of complications associated with the use of acetaminophen and NSAIDs. Long-acting local anesthetics, the use of natural products and a newly approved prescription analgesic will also be part of the material covered.

Objectives

Upon completion of this presentation, you will be able to:

• Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of opioids as analgesics.
• Explain when NSAIDs pose a significant health risk to the patient.
• Describe how to use natural products with analgesic properties.
• Define how to incorporate a new analgesic, suzetrigine, into your practice.
• Summarize how to incorporate long-acting local anesthetics into your analgesic toolbox.
  

Speaker

Ernest B. Luce, DDS received his doctor of dental surgery from University of Texas Health Science Center Dental Branch, Houston, TX and his certificate in General Dentistry from University of Texas Health San Antionio. Dr. Luce holds an appointment as Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of General Dentistry at the UT Health San Antionio Dental School. His interest focuses on sedation and providing dental care for the medically compromised patient.

This LIVE course satisfies specific requirements under TSBDE  RULE §111.1 Standards for Prescribing Controlled Substances and Dangerous Drugs and RULE §104.1 (2)(B) Continuing Education.

When you complete this course, you will have met the following requirements:

• Hours required to meet Rule §111.1
• The same hours will satisfy the continuing education hours regarding recordkeeping continuing education requirements of Rule §104.1 safe and effective pain management related to the prescription of opioids.

Licensed dentists whose practice includes direct patient care must complete not less than 2 hours of continuing education annually, and not less than 4 hours for each biennial renewal. The 4 hours may be used to satisfy the 16-hour technical and scientific requirement.
